Lumpectomy and lymph node removal

Lymph nodes drain fluid from the breast and nearby areas. Testing selected nodes can show whether cancer cells have reached regional tissue, while a wider node operation may be considered when the team has a specific reason. Lumpectomy is used for some people with Breast Cancer and selected cases of Paget Disease of the Breast. The operation does not remove every breast cell, so additional treatment such as Radiotherapy may be recommended based on the pathology and treatment plan.

Before surgery, ask which nodes will be assessed, where scars will be placed, and how results will affect further care. Afterward, follow wound instructions, keep scheduled pathology discussions, and use the arm as advised by the surgical team. Report increasing redness, wound opening, fever, new drainage, worsening swelling, or arm heaviness. Gentle movement may be recommended to protect shoulder function, but the timing should match your team’s instructions.

Contact the team promptly for fever, spreading redness, uncontrolled pain, persistent bleeding, sudden breathlessness, or swelling that rapidly worsens. New arm swelling, tightness, numbness, or reduced movement also deserves review because lymph node surgery can affect drainage and shoulder comfort.
