Lump Under the Skin on the Face: What to Know

Facial lumps may be cysts, blocked pores, inflamed follicles, scar tissue, or other benign skin growths. Note whether the area is soft or firm, mobile or fixed, painful or symptom-free, and whether the skin above it is red or unchanged. Skin lumps are a visible finding rather than a diagnosis.

A boil usually becomes tender, warm, red, and swollen as infection develops. A spot that keeps crusting, bleeds, enlarges, or changes its outline should be assessed because basal cell carcinoma may appear as a changing lesion on exposed facial skin.

Clean the skin gently, avoid squeezing or puncturing the lump, and pause irritating products over it. Take a clear photograph and note changes in size, discomfort, drainage, or colour. A clinician can decide whether monitoring, medication, drainage, removal, or another approach fits the finding. Steroid injection into the skin may help selected inflammatory lesions, but it should never be chosen before the cause is considered.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapid enlargement, increasing warmth or redness, pus, fever, or swelling near the eye. Urgent care is needed for vision changes, severe facial swelling, or difficulty opening the eye. Make a routine appointment when a lump remains, repeatedly returns, becomes hard or fixed, or develops bleeding, ulceration, or a new surface change.

Ask what features suggest a cyst, boil, scar, or other growth; whether the lump needs treatment or only review; and how to care for the surrounding skin. If removal is discussed, ask about healing, scarring, and signs of infection afterward.
