Lump Under the Skin on the Buttock: What to Know

Buttock skin is exposed to sitting, friction, sweat, and hair follicles. A blocked follicle, cyst, inflamed spot, or scar can therefore feel like a firm or mobile lump. A boil is a painful infection around a follicle and may become warm, red, and swollen. Skin lumps are a broad symptom, so the surface and pattern over time matter more than location alone.

A lump that is hard, fixed, steadily enlarging, or associated with unusual surface changes needs a clinical examination. Basal cell carcinoma is less typical in this location than on sun-exposed skin, but any persistent changing skin growth should be assessed rather than assumed to be a boil.

Keep the area clean and dry, choose loose clothing, and reduce direct pressure when possible. Do not lance or squeeze the lump. If it opens, cover it with a clean dressing and wash your hands after touching it. A clinician may recommend observation, drainage, removal, or another option depending on the finding. Intralesional steroid injection can be considered for selected inflammatory lumps, but it cannot treat every cause.

Arrange same-day advice for rapidly increasing pain, warmth, redness, swelling, pus, fever, or red streaking. Urgent care is sensible if you feel faint, markedly unwell, or cannot sit or walk because of the swelling. A lump that recurs in the same area, remains after inflammation settles, grows, bleeds, or changes colour deserves a planned review.

Ask whether the lump is a boil, cyst, scar, or another growth; whether it needs drainage or sampling; and how to reduce rubbing while it heals. If it has returned before, ask whether hair follicles or a recurring skin condition could be contributing.
