Lump Under the Skin Next to the Nose: What to Know

A lump beside the nose can involve a blocked pore, an epidermoid cyst, an inflamed follicle, or normal soft tissue that has become more noticeable. Its texture, colour, tenderness, and speed of change provide useful clues, but they do not establish a diagnosis. Skin lumps describe a finding rather than one single condition.

A boil is an infection around a hair follicle and may become painful, warm, red, and filled with pus. A persistent facial bump that bleeds, crusts, or changes shape should be examined, because basal cell carcinoma can appear on sun-exposed skin.

Wash gently and avoid picking, needles, harsh scrubs, or repeated pressing. Do not apply strong acne or steroid products close to the nostril without advice. Record when the lump appeared and whether it is enlarging or draining. A clinician can decide if observation, drainage, removal, or another treatment is suitable. Intralesional steroid injection may be discussed for some inflammatory lesions, but only after the diagnosis and safe injection site are clear.

Get prompt care if redness or swelling spreads toward the cheek or eye, pain becomes severe, pus is increasing, or you develop fever. Seek urgent attention for eye swelling, vision symptoms, severe headache, or feeling acutely unwell. Book a routine skin review if the bump remains, enlarges, repeatedly crusts, or bleeds.

Ask whether the lump is superficial or deeper, whether a cyst or infection is suspected, and whether it needs treatment or monitoring. Ask which cleansing products are safe around the nostril and what specific change should prompt an earlier review.
