Lump Under the Skin Near the Eye: What to Know

The area around the eye contains delicate skin, small glands, and soft tissue, so a lump may feel firm, soft, tender, or fixed. A blocked eyelid gland can form a rounded swelling, while an irritated follicle, cyst, or local inflammation can affect nearby skin. A lump is a common presentation of skin lumps, but its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

A boil can become red and sore as inflammation develops. A slowly enlarging, scaly, bleeding, or repeatedly crusting spot should also be checked because some skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, can occur on sun-exposed facial skin.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or massage the lump, especially close to the eyelid. Keep hands and cosmetics clean, and note its size, tenderness, colour, and whether it moves with the skin. A clinician may examine the eyelid and surrounding skin before recommending observation, removal, or treatment. Steroid injection into the skin is sometimes considered for selected inflammatory lumps, but it is not a home treatment and should not be used near the eye without specialist judgement.

Arrange prompt medical care for increasing redness or swelling, pus, fever, marked tenderness, or swelling spreading around the eye. Seek urgent help for blurred or double vision, pain when moving the eye, difficulty opening the eye, or a sudden change in eyesight. A lump that persists, grows, bleeds, or changes in surface also merits a skin assessment.

Ask whether the lump appears to involve the eyelid, skin, or deeper tissue; whether its position makes an eye examination advisable; and what changes should trigger a review. You can also ask whether a photograph or follow-up visit would help track it.
