What should you know about lump under skin lower back?

The lower back is exposed to pressure from chairs, belts, backpacks, and clothing. A blocked follicle or cyst may form a rounded lump close to the skin; a boil may be hot, red, tender, and filled with pus. A softer, mobile lump can arise deeper in the fatty layer, while a firm or fixed lump needs direct examination. The surface may look normal even when the swelling sits below it.

Record whether the lump has been present for days or longer, whether it changes in size, and whether the skin is warm or draining. A persistent changing skin growth should be examined, including to consider conditions such as basal cell carcinoma. A lump’s presence does not establish a cancer diagnosis.

Avoid pressing, puncturing, or repeatedly checking the lump. Reduce pressure on the area, keep any broken skin clean, and note its approximate position and changes. A clinician can examine mobility, depth, tenderness, and skin involvement and decide whether monitoring, treatment, imaging, or sampling is appropriate. A steroid injection into the skin may be considered for some inflammatory lesions, but it is not a general treatment for every lower-back lump.

Get prompt care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, very painful, hot, red, or starts draining pus, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Arrange an appointment for a lump that remains, returns, becomes hard or fixed, bleeds, or causes persistent discomfort. Seek urgent help for severe worsening pain with marked swelling or new weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Ask whether the lump is in the skin or deeper tissue, what features suggest infection, and whether it needs imaging or a sample. Ask how to protect the area from pressure and what change should prompt an earlier review.
