What should you know about lump under skin in mouth?

The mouth includes the lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, and the floor and roof of the mouth. A lump may follow accidental biting, rubbing from a tooth or denture, a blocked saliva duct, or local inflammation. A boil is generally a skin infection, so a bump inside the mouth may need a different assessment than a skin lump. The colour, firmness, surface, tenderness, and exact position help a dentist or clinician decide what it represents.

A sore that fails to settle, bleeds without an obvious injury, becomes firm, or changes nearby tissue needs professional attention. Do not assume that a mouth lump is caused by cancer, and do not try to cut or drain it yourself.

Rinse gently with plain water, use a soft toothbrush, and avoid sharp, spicy, or very hot foods if they aggravate the area. Check for a sharp tooth, broken dental appliance, or recent bite, but do not keep rubbing the bump to test it. Arrange a dental or medical review if it persists, recurs, or makes chewing uncomfortable. Treatments used for skin lesions, including a steroid injection into the skin, are not automatically appropriate inside the mouth.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, heavy bleeding, or inability to open the mouth normally. Arrange prompt dental or medical care for fever, pus, spreading redness, severe pain, or a lump that is firm, enlarging, or not healing. A persistent mouth change should be assessed even when it is not painful.

Ask whether the bump is linked to a tooth, salivary gland, bite injury, or infection. You can also ask how long to monitor it, whether a dental examination or sample is needed, and which changes require earlier review.
