What should you know about lump under skin in groin area?

The groin has hair follicles, sweat glands, lymph nodes, and tissues beneath the skin, so a lump may arise from more than one layer. Friction, shaving, or an inflamed follicle can cause a tender surface bump. A boil may feel sore and warm and can develop drainage. A deeper lump may feel less connected to the skin and needs an examination to clarify its origin. The presence of a groin lump is not enough to identify its cause.

Notice whether the lump sits in the skin or deeper, whether it changes with movement or straining, and whether nearby skin is red or broken. A persistent or unusual skin change may prompt assessment for conditions such as basal cell carcinoma, although many groin lumps have other explanations.

Keep the area dry and reduce friction with loose, breathable clothing. Pause shaving over the bump and do not squeeze or puncture it. Note its size, tenderness, drainage, and any recent shaving, exercise, skin injury, or illness. A clinician can determine whether the lump is a skin lesion, swollen node, or another structure and choose observation, treatment, or further evaluation. A steroid injection into the skin is only considered for selected problems after infection has been excluded.

Arrange prompt care for a groin lump that is rapidly enlarging, very painful, hot, associated with spreading redness, or producing pus. Seek urgent help if you feel faint or severely unwell, or if swelling causes sudden severe pain. Book an examination when a lump does not settle, repeatedly returns, becomes firm or fixed, or is accompanied by unexplained skin changes.

Ask which layer the lump seems to involve, whether it resembles a boil or cyst, and whether an examination or imaging is needed. Ask what hygiene, hair-removal, and clothing choices may reduce recurrence.
