What should you know about lump under skin hurts?

Tenderness can occur when a blocked follicle, cyst, or boil irritates nearby tissue. A boil may become red, warm, swollen, and increasingly sore. Other lumps can be deeper, firm, or mobile and may not be related to infection. A breast, armpit, neck, or groin lump deserves attention to its own features rather than a diagnosis based on pain alone. A skin lump is a symptom with several possible explanations; a clinician may inspect it and feel its edges, surface, warmth, and mobility.

A changing sore, bleeding area, or persistent growth can require a different evaluation, including consideration of conditions such as basal cell carcinoma. Pain does not by itself identify the cause.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly massage the lump, because this can worsen inflammation or spread infection. Keep the area clean, reduce rubbing from clothing, and record when it appeared, whether it is growing, and whether the skin has changed. A healthcare professional can decide whether observation, drainage, testing, or another treatment is appropriate. In selected cases, a steroid injection into the skin may be discussed, but it is not suitable for every lump, especially one that may be infected.

Seek prompt medical care if redness is spreading, the area is hot and rapidly enlarging, pus is present, or you feel feverish or unwell. Arrange an appointment for a lump that remains, returns, becomes harder, changes the overlying skin, or interferes with movement or sleep. Seek urgent help for severe pain with rapidly worsening swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Ask whether the lump appears superficial or deep, whether infection is suspected, and what changes should trigger review. You can also ask whether it needs imaging, drainage, a sample, or simple monitoring.
