Lump under the breast near the ribs

The lower breast overlaps the rib cage, cartilage, muscles, and skin fold. A firm area that feels attached to the chest wall may be a rib or muscle contour, while a surface bump may be a cyst or inflamed follicle. Breast tissue can also form cysts, fibroadenomas, or hormonally related areas of thickening. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, although the position of a lump cannot determine its cause.

Pain with twisting, coughing, lifting, or pressing may suggest involvement of the chest wall, while cycle-related fullness may reflect hormonal change. These clues are worth sharing, but they are not a diagnosis.

Use a mirror to inspect the skin, then make a brief note of the lump's location relative to the breast fold and ribs. Compare the two sides without forceful pressing. Arrange a medical review if it is new and remains, enlarges, becomes harder, or is unlike the other side. Examination may distinguish skin, breast, muscle, cartilage, and rib findings; imaging can be selected when needed.

Seek prompt care for redness, warmth, fever, increasing swelling, significant tenderness, bloody discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or an armpit lump. Get urgent help if the lump is accompanied by sudden breathlessness, severe chest pain, or collapse.

Ask whether the lump is in the breast or chest wall, whether movement changes its significance, whether imaging is needed, and how soon it should be reassessed if it remains.
