Lump on upper arm under the skin: what to know

The upper arm is also exposed to friction, injections, and minor knocks, which can make an area tender. A description alone cannot identify the tissue involved.

A soft, mobile lump may sit in fatty tissue. A cyst can recur or show a small surface opening, while a boil is more likely to be painful, red, warm, and inflamed. A lump that is fixed, enlarging, or associated with a persistent sore or crust should be examined. Basal cell carcinoma can affect exposed skin and alter its surface, but many upper-arm lumps have other causes.

Leave the lump alone rather than squeezing, piercing, or repeatedly rubbing it. Note its position, approximate size, tenderness, and any skin or drainage changes. Book a clinical review if it remains, returns, enlarges, or limits arm movement. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may be observation, drainage, removal, or a steroid injection into the skin for a suitable inflammatory lesion.

Arrange prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or severe pain. Seek urgent help for new arm weakness, numbness, marked swelling, or difficulty breathing. A lump that bleeds, ulcerates, or keeps changing should not be managed by home observation alone.

Ask which tissue layer seems involved, whether the lump needs imaging or sampling, and whether an old injury or injection could explain its position. Ask how to watch it safely and which change should prompt an earlier appointment.
