Lump on the side of the neck and sore throat

Lymph nodes beside the throat may enlarge and become sore when the throat or tonsils are inflamed. Common cold, influenza and COVID-19 can cause sore throat with other respiratory symptoms. Tonsillitis, strep throat and glandular fever can also produce throat pain and neck-node swelling. Allergic rhinitis may cause drainage that irritates the throat, while acid reflux can cause repeated throat irritation without a typical infection. The location, tenderness and timing of the lump matter. A sore throat is a presentation of these conditions; it is not proof that any one condition is present.

Rest, drink regularly, choose soft foods, and try warm or cool drinks according to what feels soothing. A suitable labelled pain reliever may help if you can take it safely. Avoid smoking and do not share cups or utensils while an infection is possible. Arrange a medical review if swallowing pain continues, the lump is enlarging, or symptoms are not improving. Antibiotics are not helpful for every sore throat, so treatment should follow an examination or appropriate testing.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, inability to open the mouth, or rapidly worsening neck swelling. Prompt assessment is needed for marked weakness, dehydration, persistent high fever, or a lump that is hard, fixed or still present after the throat illness settles.

Ask whether the lump is a lymph node, whether a throat swab is appropriate, how to manage pain safely, and what duration or change should trigger follow-up.
