Lump on the rib under the breast

At this border, normal anatomy can be confusing. The finding might be a skin cyst, an irritated hair follicle, a tender muscle, an inflamed cartilage connection, or the contour of a rib. Breast tissue can also extend lower than expected. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, although many other conditions can produce a lump.

Pain after lifting, coughing, exercise, or a knock can point toward the chest wall, while cycle-related fullness can occur in breast tissue. Neither pattern is enough to diagnose the cause at home.

Book an appointment if the lump is new or remains after your next usual cycle, or if you cannot tell whether it is in the breast or on the rib. Use a light touch rather than repeated checking, and write down its location, texture, tenderness, and any associated discharge or skin change.

During an assessment, the clinician may compare both sides and examine the breast, chest wall, skin, and armpit. Imaging can be considered when examination alone cannot explain the finding.

Get prompt care for a hot, red, rapidly enlarging lump, fever, or marked pain. Seek an urgent breast review for a firm fixed lump, dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a new armpit swelling. Emergency help is appropriate for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, collapse, or serious injury.

Ask what structure the lump appears to involve, whether an ultrasound or other assessment is needed, whether activity or the menstrual cycle could affect it, and which warning changes should lead you back sooner.
