Lump on the Nose Under the Skin: What to Know

The nose contains hair follicles and oil glands that can become blocked or inflamed. A boil may feel tender, warm, and increasingly swollen, while a deeper cyst can remain firm with little surface change. A lump may also follow minor trauma or irritation. A spot that crusts, bleeds, repeatedly scabs, or slowly enlarges needs professional assessment because some skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, can resemble an innocent bump. A photo and hands-on examination help distinguish these possibilities.

Keep the area clean with a mild cleanser and avoid squeezing, piercing, or applying harsh acids. Warm compresses may be soothing when the area is mildly inflamed, but stop if swelling worsens. Do not remove a suspected cyst wall yourself. A clinician can decide whether observation, prescription treatment, sampling, or a procedure is appropriate. A steroid injection into the skin is sometimes considered for selected inflammatory lesions, but it is not suitable for every lump or every location.

Book an assessment if the lump lasts, enlarges, becomes firm or fixed, changes the skin surface, or returns after settling. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, pus, fever, severe tenderness, or swelling near the eye. Urgent help is appropriate for trouble breathing, vision changes, or rapidly developing facial swelling.
