Lump on Neck from an Ingrown Hair: What to Know

An ingrown hair curls back into the skin instead of growing outward. This can create a firm or tender bump, redness, itching, or a visible trapped hair. A nearby follicle can become inflamed, a process called folliculitis. Shaving closely, friction from collars, and coarse or curly hair can make recurrence more likely. Similar bumps may occur with razor bumps or keratosis pilaris. A lump without a visible hair can have another cause, so avoid assuming the appearance confirms one diagnosis.

Pause close shaving over the area and use warm, clean compresses for short periods to soften the skin. Wash gently, pat dry, and avoid squeezing, digging, or repeatedly checking the bump; these actions can injure the follicle and introduce bacteria.
