Lump on the jawline under the skin

Jawline bumps often arise in hair-bearing skin, where shaving, ingrown hairs, blocked follicles, and acne-related inflammation can create a tender nodule. A smooth lump under the skin may instead be a cyst. Nearby lymph nodes can enlarge during an infection, so a clinician considers the exact position, movement, tenderness, and recent illness. A skin lump is a symptom and cannot identify its own cause.

Check the overlying skin for redness, warmth, crusting, bleeding, or a sore that does not heal. A changing lesion should be examined, including when basal cell carcinoma is a concern; the presence of a jawline lump does not establish that condition.

Leave the lump alone rather than popping or repeatedly massaging it. Cleanse gently, avoid shaving across it, and use products that do not sting the area. Record whether it changes with meals, mouth or dental symptoms, a sore throat, or skin irritation, because these details help the assessment. Book a clinician visit if it remains, returns, enlarges, or affects chewing or neck movement. Depending on the cause, treatment can include observation, infection care, lesion removal, or a selected steroid injection into the skin.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, fever, severe pain, marked facial swelling, trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, or difficulty opening the mouth. Arrange timely review for a hard or fixed lump, a persistent sore, bleeding, or progressive enlargement. Dental pain or swelling alongside a jawline lump also warrants prompt dental or medical assessment.

Ask whether the lump is in the skin or a lymph node, whether dental or throat symptoms could relate, whether imaging is appropriate, and which changes require faster review.
