What should you know about a lump on the chin under the skin?

A tender lump within the chin skin may follow acne or an irritated hair follicle. A smooth, round, movable lump can be a cyst. A swelling beneath the chin may instead be a lymph node responding to a mouth, throat, or skin problem. Redness, warmth, or drainage raises concern for inflammation or a boil. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading facial redness, fever, worsening swelling, pus, severe pain, difficulty opening the mouth, swallowing, or breathing. Urgent review is also needed if swelling tracks toward the eye or neck. A lump that persists with unexplained weight change, drenching night sweats, or ongoing illness should not be ignored.
