What should you know about lump on back of neck near spine no pain?

The prominent bone at the base of the neck can look more noticeable with posture, body shape, or changes in surrounding muscle and soft tissue. A separate lump may be a cyst, lipoma, enlarged lymph node, or another skin or soft-tissue structure. It is not possible to identify the cause reliably from a description alone. A spinal condition such as [Lumbar Spondylosis](/conditions/lumbar-spondylosis/) affects the lower back, so it would not by itself explain a new neck lump.

Look at the area in good light and record its approximate position and whether it changes when you bend or straighten the neck. Do not repeatedly press, massage, or attempt to drain it. Book a routine examination if it is new, enlarging, firm, fixed, associated with skin change, or still present without an obvious explanation. A clinician can decide whether observation, an ultrasound, or another test is appropriate.

Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, redness and warmth, fever, severe headache with neck stiffness, trouble swallowing or breathing, or a new neurological symptom such as arm weakness or spreading numbness. An urgent assessment is also sensible after a significant injury, especially if the bump is accompanied by severe neck pain or reduced movement.

Ask whether the bump is part of the normal bone contour or a separate mass, what features make follow-up necessary, and whether nearby skin, lymph nodes, muscles, or the spine need examination. Tell the clinician when you first noticed it and whether its shape or size has changed.
