What should you know about a lump near the elbow under the skin?

A soft, movable lump can arise from fatty tissue or a cyst. A tender, warm, red swelling may reflect irritation, infection, or a boil. A swelling directly over the point of the elbow can involve the bursa, a small cushioning sac that may become irritated after pressure or injury. Skin lumps are often harmless, but a firm lump that is fixed, enlarging, bleeding, or changing deserves an in-person examination. Basal Cell Carcinoma usually affects sun-exposed skin and may appear as a persistent sore, scaly patch, or shiny bump; a lump alone cannot identify it.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the area. Note when you first noticed it, whether it moves with the skin, and whether elbow movement or leaning on the joint makes it worse. Photographing the surface can help you compare changes. Keep broken skin clean and covered. Arrange a routine appointment if the lump remains, grows, limits movement, or causes repeated discomfort; a clinician may inspect it and decide whether imaging or another test is useful.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, marked warmth, drainage, fever, severe pain, numbness, or difficulty bending the elbow. An injury followed by substantial swelling or loss of arm function also needs assessment. Urgent evaluation is appropriate if the skin becomes dark or the pain is out of proportion to what you can see.

Ask whether the lump feels like a cyst, bursa swelling, or solid tissue; whether its position explains pain with pressure; and which changes should trigger a sooner review. If treatment is discussed, ask whether observation, drainage, removal, or a steroid injection into the skin is suitable for the suspected cause.
