What should you know about lump inside the skin?

An under-skin lump may arise from a cyst, fatty tissue, a fibrous nodule, an inflamed follicle, or deeper soft tissue. Tenderness, warmth, redness, and drainage suggest inflammation can be present, while a quiet, mobile lump may have a different explanation. A lump inside the skin is a presentation rather than a diagnosis, so the symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Useful details include the body site, duration, mobility, firmness, skin colour, relation to movement, and whether it followed trauma or irritation. A clinician may compare it with nearby tissue and decide if further testing is needed.

Leave the skin intact and avoid squeezing, needles, vigorous rubbing, or unapproved creams. Take a clear note of when you first noticed the lump and any changes since then. Seek a routine examination when it persists, grows, recurs, becomes uncomfortable, or remains unexplained. Monitoring may be reasonable only after its features have been assessed.

Arrange prompt care for rapid growth, marked pain, spreading redness, heat, pus, fever, or a wound that does not heal. Urgent assessment is appropriate if the lump causes numbness, weakness, impaired movement, or sudden severe swelling. A fixed, hard, bleeding, crusted, or ulcerated lesion should not be ignored.

Ask what tissue layer seems involved, whether the lump can be safely observed, and what change would require follow-up. Explain its timing, symptoms, triggers, previous treatments, and any impact on movement or sensation.
