A Painful Lump Inside the Breast

Tenderness may follow menstrual hormone changes, pressure from a bra or activity, a fluid-filled cyst, or inflammation. Pain can help describe a lump, but it cannot by itself identify the cause. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, while many painful lumps have other explanations.

Tell the clinician whether pain is constant or cyclical, whether it worsens with touch or movement, and whether the lump is soft, firm, mobile, or fixed. Also mention discharge, redness, warmth, or a recent injury.

Wear a supportive, comfortable bra and avoid repeated checking or squeezing. Keep a brief record of the pain, cycle timing, and changes in the lump. Arrange an appointment for a new, persistent, enlarging, or unexplained lump. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.

Seek prompt care if pain comes with a hot, red, swollen breast, fever, or feeling unwell. Arrange timely review for a fixed lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or an armpit lump. Severe or rapidly worsening pain also warrants earlier assessment rather than prolonged self-monitoring.

Ask what might explain both the pain and the lump, whether examination or imaging is needed, and which pain treatments fit your health circumstances. Ask how long to monitor the area and what changes should prompt a sooner visit.
