What should you know about lump in pubic area under skin?

The pubic area has hair follicles and is exposed to moisture, shaving, waxing, tight clothing, and friction. A tender surface bump may be an ingrown hair or boil; a deeper, smoother lump may have another cause, such as a cyst or swollen tissue. A pubic-area lump is a presentation of several possible skin conditions, and it is not proof of a sexually transmitted infection or cancer.

Notice whether the lump is on hair-bearing skin, near a skin fold, or close to the genitals. A lump in the groin crease may also be different from one within the skin itself.

Pause shaving or waxing over the area and choose loose, breathable clothing. Keep the skin clean and dry without scrubbing. Do not squeeze or lance the lump, especially if it is deep or close to genital tissue. Arrange a private clinical assessment if it does not settle, keeps returning, or is associated with discharge, sores, or other genital symptoms.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, severe pain, fever, pus, rapidly increasing swelling, or skin that becomes dusky or breaks open. Get urgent advice for sudden genital swelling, difficulty passing urine, or feeling faint. A firm lump that is fixed, enlarging, bleeding, or not healing should be examined without delay.

Ask whether the lump is follicle-related, a cyst, a boil, or something deeper, and whether testing is needed. Tell the clinician about recent hair removal, friction, new products, sexual exposure, drainage, pain, and any similar past episodes.
