What should you know about lump in forearm under skin?

A soft, mobile lump may arise from fatty tissue or a cyst, while a firm spot can reflect a fibrous growth or another solid lesion. A painful, warm, red lump can occur with inflammation or infection, including a boil. A forearm lump is a presentation of several different skin and soft-tissue changes; it does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

A clinician will consider how long it has been present, whether it moves beneath the fingers, whether the skin over it has changed, and whether it followed an injury, bite, injection, or repeated friction.

Do not squeeze, cut, or repeatedly press the area. Note its location, approximate size, tenderness, colour, and whether it changes over time. Arrange a routine medical assessment if it persists, grows, returns, or interferes with movement. Examination may be enough; imaging or sampling can be considered when the lump is deep, atypical, or uncertain.

Seek prompt care if the forearm becomes rapidly swollen, very painful, hot, or increasingly red, or if drainage is accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. Urgent assessment is also sensible for a lump that becomes fixed, enlarges steadily, bleeds, ulcerates, or causes new weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the hand.

Ask what the lump feels like on examination, whether an ultrasound or other test is useful, and whether monitoring or removal is appropriate. Mention any injury, skin break, new medicine, or change in sensation affecting the forearm.
