What should you know about a lump in the armpit during pregnancy?

Pregnancy-related breast and glandular changes can extend toward the armpit. Lymph nodes may also enlarge in response to irritation or infection in the arm, breast, or nearby skin. An armpit lump can sometimes occur with breast cancer or lymphoma, but its presence does not establish either condition.

Notice whether the lump is in the skin or deeper, whether it is sore or mobile, and whether it changes with breast fullness. Tell the clinician about breast changes, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, redness, fever, recent vaccines, shaving irritation, or an arm infection.

Tell your obstetric or primary-care team about a new, persistent, enlarging, firm, or unexplained lump. They can coordinate a breast and armpit examination and choose pregnancy-appropriate imaging if needed. Do not delay because you are pregnant, and do not squeeze, massage deeply, or try to drain the lump.

Bring the pregnancy timeline, previous breast imaging if available, and a list of medicines. Ask how the proposed examination or scan fits with pregnancy. A breast specialist may be involved when the findings need further clarification.

Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, high fever, sudden swelling, or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange prompt review for a hard or fixed lump, progressive enlargement, a new breast skin or nipple change, bloody discharge, or a lump that remains after nearby irritation settles. These features determine timing, not a conclusion about the cause.

Ask whether the lump feels like breast tissue, a lymph node, or a skin lesion; what imaging is suitable during pregnancy; whether follow-up after delivery is needed; and which changes should be reported immediately. Ask how the examination will protect your comfort and privacy.
