What should you know about lower right abdominal pain during ovulation?

Ovulation pain can occur when an ovary releases an egg. It is often felt on one side of the lower abdomen, may be a dull ache or sharper twinge, and can last from a short time to a day or so. The side may vary from one cycle to another. A pattern that appears near the middle of the cycle and settles without other illness signs can fit ovulation pain, but timing alone cannot confirm its cause.

Digestive conditions can also cause lower abdominal discomfort, including gastroenteritis, food poisoning, Crohn's disease, or diverticular disease. Pregnancy-related problems, ovarian cysts, urinary conditions, and appendicitis are other possibilities that require clinical assessment when symptoms do not follow your usual pattern.

Note when the pain begins, which side is affected, how long it lasts, and whether it follows your cycle. Rest, gentle warmth, and fluids may help mild discomfort. Avoid self-treating ongoing or worsening pain without checking the cause, particularly if pregnancy is possible.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, a swollen or rigid abdomen, pain with possible pregnancy, or pain that steadily worsens. Arrange a medical review for recurring pain that disrupts activities, lasts beyond your usual ovulation window, or comes with bowel, urinary, or unusual vaginal symptoms.
