Lower Lumbar Microdiscectomy: What to Know

Short answer

Lower lumbar microdiscectomy removes the part of a herniated disc pressing on a nerve, aiming to relieve leg-dominant pain when appropriate non-surgical care is insufficient.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main target
The operation focuses on disc material that is pressing on a spinal nerve.
Recovery focus
Walking, wound care, graded activity, and follow-up guide the return to everyday tasks.

What the operation involves

A surgeon reaches the affected lower-spine level through a small incision, moves tissue aside, and removes the disc fragment irritating the nerve. A surgical microscope may improve visualisation of the working area. The procedure addresses nerve compression; it does not remove every part of the disc or guarantee that all back pain will disappear. It is usually considered after the diagnosis, symptoms, examination, and response to non-surgical care have been reviewed.

The problem being treated may cause sciatica or radiating leg pain, with pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness following a nerve pathway. Your surgeon should explain the expected benefit, possible risks, anaesthesia plan, wound care, and alternatives, which may include physiotherapy, an epidural steroid injection, or endoscopic spine surgery in selected cases.

Preparing and recovering

Before surgery, share your medicines, allergies, previous operations, and any new weakness or bladder or bowel symptoms. Arrange help for early daily tasks and follow the hospital instructions about eating, medicines, bathing, and walking. Afterward, short walks and gradual activity are commonly built into recovery, while heavy lifting, repeated bending, and twisting are increased only according to the surgical plan.

Physiotherapy may help restore movement, trunk and leg strength, lifting technique, and confidence. Keep the wound clean as instructed and attend follow-up even if leg pain improves, because healing and activity progression still need review.

When to seek urgent help

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening leg weakness, new numbness, increasing pain that is not controlled, fever, wound redness, drainage, or difficulty passing urine. Emergency care is needed for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, severe breathing symptoms, or sudden major weakness. Follow your own discharge instructions if they are more specific.

Questions to ask before surgery

Which nerve is compressed, and what symptom is the operation expected to improve? What alternatives remain for me? Which activities must I avoid and for how long? When can I drive or work? What wound, nerve, bladder, or bowel changes should trigger urgent contact?
