What should you know about lower lip is swollen?

Angioedema is swelling in deeper skin layers and can affect the lips, sometimes with hives. A tender area with warmth, pus, fever or worsening redness may point toward infection. Burning or cracking after a new balm, food or toothpaste may reflect irritation or contact sensitivity. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop a newly introduced lip product and rinse the area gently. Use a cool compress wrapped in cloth for short periods, avoid picking or squeezing, and drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable. Record foods, medicines, stings, dental work and products used before the swelling. A clinician can examine the lip and mouth and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.

Seek emergency help immediately if swelling involves the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness or difficulty swallowing. Arrange prompt medical review for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, severe pain, pus, eye involvement or swelling that keeps returning.

Ask whether the pattern fits irritation, infection or angioedema; which medicines and products to avoid; whether your teeth or gums could contribute; and what symptoms should trigger emergency care if the swelling returns.
