Short answer

Lower forearm pain commonly follows repetitive loading or injury, and its location and triggers help guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common triggers
Gripping, lifting, wrist bending, typing, or repetitive tool use
Helpful detail
Inner and outer forearm pain can point toward different tendon regions
Protect the hand
Seek prompt help for new weakness, numbness, or a cold or pale hand

What the pain may mean

The lower forearm contains muscles and tendons that move the wrist and fingers, as well as nerves and blood vessels. Repeated gripping, typing, racquet sports, lifting, or tool use can irritate these tissues. Pain on the inner side near the elbow can occur with Golfer's Elbow, while pain on the outer side may occur with Tennis Elbow. A direct blow can cause bruising, and a fall can injure a bone or joint. Numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain that travels into the hand changes the assessment. A physical examination can compare grip, wrist movement, sensation, and tenderness.

What to do now

Reduce the activity that provokes the pain, especially forceful gripping and repeated wrist bending. Keep the wrist and elbow moving gently within a comfortable range so they do not become stiff. Use a neutral wrist position for keyboard or tool work, take regular pauses, and spread heavy tasks across both hands when possible. A wrapped cold pack may ease symptoms after activity; protect the skin. Do not resume heavy lifting until everyday movement is comfortable. A physiotherapist can adjust work technique and prescribe progressive strengthening once irritability settles.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care after a major fall or blow if the forearm looks deformed, swelling is rapid, pain is severe, or the hand becomes pale, cold, or difficult to move. Arrange prompt assessment for persistent numbness, new weakness, loss of grip, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. A clinician should review symptoms that interfere with sleep, work, or ordinary use, particularly when there is no clear trigger.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

Ask whether the pain points to a muscle, tendon, nerve, bone, or joint problem. Ask which movements to avoid, how to modify your workstation or sport, and when strengthening should begin. If symptoms travel into the hand, ask whether sensation and grip need specific testing.

Questions people ask

Should I massage a painful forearm?

Gentle surrounding movement may feel comfortable, but avoid forceful massage over swelling, bruising, or sharp pain until the cause is clearer.

How long should I rest my forearm?

Rest the aggravating activity until daily movement is easier, then rebuild use gradually with guidance if pain persists or returns.
