What to know about lower ear pain

Earache may accompany a Common Cold, blocked earwax, or Middle Ear Infection. Sinusitis and Tonsillitis can send pain toward the ear even when the ear itself is healthy. Jaw-joint strain, dental problems, a skin irritation or pressure changes during travel may also cause discomfort. Pain when touching the outer ear, reduced hearing, discharge, fever, sore throat or pain with chewing gives a clinician useful clues.

Keep the ear dry and do not insert cotton buds, fingers or other objects. Use a warm cloth against the area and consider a usual pain reliever only if it is suitable for you and taken according to its label. Do not use leftover ear drops or antibiotics. Seek prompt medical care for severe or worsening pain, swelling behind the ear, new hearing loss, fluid or blood from the ear, marked dizziness, facial weakness, or fever with a very unwell feeling. Ask whether the pain is arising from the ear, throat, teeth or jaw, whether the eardrum can be seen clearly, and what treatment is appropriate.
