Short answer

Lower back muscle pain after squats may result from overload or a technique change, while leg symptoms, weakness, or poor recovery call for clinical review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Training variables
Load, stance, depth, speed, and fatigue
Return principle
Increase demand only after a comfortable level is tolerated
Seek urgent help
Weakness, saddle numbness, or bladder or bowel changes

Possible sources of the pain

The lower back helps control the trunk while the hips and knees bend. A sudden change in load, stance, depth, speed, or fatigue can increase demand on the back muscles. Muscle Strain, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, or Non-Specific Low Back Pain are possible explanations. Facet Joint Syndrome, Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction, Spinal Stenosis, Herniated Disc, and Lumbar Spondylosis may be considered only when the broader symptom pattern supports them. Pain after squats does not by itself identify a particular condition.

Adjust training safely

Set aside heavy squats and painful variations for now, but keep easy movement if it feels comfortable. Review bracing, breathing, foot position, hip control, and whether the weight shifts during the ascent. Restart with a lighter challenge and a smaller range, adding demand only when the previous level stays comfortable during and after training. A physiotherapist or qualified coach can observe the movement and help separate a training error from a medical problem.

Warning signs

Seek urgent help for new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, bladder or bowel changes, fever with severe pain, or pain after a serious fall. Arrange assessment when symptoms spread below the buttock, repeatedly stop training, disturb sleep, or fail to improve with activity modification.

Questions for an appointment

Ask whether the pain behaves like a muscle problem, whether you should change squat depth or load, and which exercises can maintain leg strength while the back settles.

Questions people ask

Why does my back hurt after squats but not during them?

Delayed soreness or irritation can become clearer after exercise as loaded tissues cool down. The pattern still needs monitoring for worsening or radiating symptoms.

Can I train my legs while my back recovers?

Often you can keep comfortable, supported movements, but choose the exercise and load according to symptoms and professional guidance.
