Low-frequency hearing test: what to know

Short answer

A low-frequency hearing test checks hearing at deeper pitches and helps clinicians distinguish hearing loss from blockage or inner-ear problems.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test examines

Low-frequency sounds are deeper tones, such as a low voice or rumble. During audiometry, you usually listen through headphones and signal whenever you hear a tone. The clinician records the quietest sounds you detect at different pitches. A low-frequency change may affect the fullness or quality of sound rather than making every conversation equally difficult. Earwax buildup can block sound, while inner-ear conditions such as Meniere's Disease can affect hearing along with pressure, ringing, or dizziness.

Preparing for the appointment

Tell the audiologist when the change began, whether one or both ears are affected, and whether you notice tinnitus, dizziness, ear pressure, discharge, pain, or recent loud-noise exposure. Avoid inserting cotton buds or objects into the ear. Bring details of medicines and previous hearing results. The test is generally non-invasive; follow-up may include looking in the ear, repeating measurements, or referral depending on the pattern.

When to seek care

Arrange urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, or neurological symptoms. Seek prompt advice for ear pain with discharge, injury, or a blocked sensation that persists. Do not delay evaluation by assuming a new change is only wax.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which frequencies changed, whether the result suggests blockage or inner-ear involvement, whether the other ear should be tested, and what follow-up is needed. Ask when to repeat the test and which symptoms should trigger earlier review.

Questions people ask

Can earwax affect low-frequency hearing?

Yes. A blockage can reduce sound reaching the eardrum, so the ear should be examined when results suggest a conductive problem.

Does a hearing test hurt?

The listening task is non-invasive; tell the clinician if headphones or any ear examination causes discomfort.
