Short answer

Lower estrogen around menopause may cause hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and reduced sexual comfort.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible effects
Temperature symptoms, sleep changes, mood changes, vaginal dryness and sexual discomfort may occur.
Bleeding after menopause
Any new bleeding after menopause should be medically assessed.

How lower estrogen may feel

Estrogen changes can affect the brain's temperature regulation, sleep, skin and genital tissues. Some people notice sudden heat, sweating at night, changing mood, lower sex drive, discomfort with sex, or vaginal dryness. Urinary symptoms and pelvic pressure can have other causes, including pelvic organ prolapse, so symptoms deserve assessment rather than being labelled automatically as menopause.

Menopause is diagnosed from the menstrual history and overall pattern in many adults, while the usefulness of hormone testing depends on age, contraception, medicines and symptoms. Periods that have stopped can have causes other than menopause.

Ways to manage symptoms

Keep the sleeping space cool, dress in layers, and identify triggers for flushing such as heat, spicy food, alcohol or stress. For dryness, a vaginal moisturiser used regularly and a water-based lubricant for sex may help. Avoid perfumed washes inside or around the vagina.

A clinician can discuss hormonal and non-hormonal options after reviewing your medical history. Seek advice before using hormonal products if you have had hormone-sensitive cancer, unexplained bleeding, blood clots, liver disease, or other relevant conditions. Explore [Menopause](/conditions/menopause/) and [Vaginal Dryness](/symptoms/vaginal-dryness/).

When symptoms need review

Arrange prompt assessment for any bleeding after menopause, bleeding after sex, new pelvic pressure or a bulge, persistent pain, or urinary changes. Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding with weakness, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness. Contact a healthcare professional if low mood becomes severe or you have thoughts of self-harm.

Questions for your doctor

Which of my symptoms fit menopause, and which need another assessment? Would local treatment for dryness be suitable? What non-hormonal options could help flushing or sleep? How should unexpected bleeding be investigated?
