Low Amniotic Fluid Symptoms

Some people notice fluid leaking from the vagina, a smaller-looking bump than expected, or less noticeable fetal movement. These signs do not confirm oligohydramnios. A slow leak can be difficult to recognise, and normal vaginal discharge or urine may look similar. The fluid level can also change without a sensation, which is why antenatal checks matter.

Contact your maternity team if you think fluid is leaking or movements seem reduced. They may examine the fluid, check your blood pressure and urine, listen to the fetal heartbeat, and arrange an ultrasound. A growth scan can assess fluid, fetal size, movement and blood flow. Management depends on gestational age, the suspected cause, fetal wellbeing and whether the membranes have ruptured.

Seek urgent maternity advice for a gush or continuing trickle of fluid, reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, regular contractions, fever, abdominal pain, or feeling unwell. Do not wait for a routine appointment if these changes occur. Use a pad rather than inserting anything into the vagina while waiting for instructions.

Ask what the ultrasound shows, whether the membranes may have ruptured, how fetal growth and blood flow will be followed, and which symptoms should prompt immediate assessment. You can also ask how monitoring might affect the timing or method of birth.
