What should you know about louie body dementia?

Short answer
Lewy body dementia is a progressive condition affecting thinking, movement, alertness, sleep and perception.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible pattern
- Fluctuating alertness with movement or visual symptoms
- First step
- A structured clinical assessment and medicine review
How it can appear
Lewy body dementia is associated with abnormal protein deposits in brain cells. A person may have changing attention or alertness, visual hallucinations, slower movement, stiffness, tremor or balance problems. Memory Problems can occur, but early difficulties may instead involve planning, visual tasks or fluctuating concentration. Acting out dreams, constipation, faintness on standing and Urinary Incontinence can also occur. These features overlap with other illnesses and medicines, so a symptom list is not enough to confirm the diagnosis.
Assessment and day-to-day support
Book a GP Consultation for a careful history, medicine review and physical examination. The clinician may arrange blood tests, brain imaging or specialist assessment to look for other explanations. Keep routines predictable, improve lighting and remove trip hazards. Use calm explanations during hallucinations rather than arguing about what the person sees. Record changes in alertness, falls, sleep behaviour, continence and daily abilities. Ask about driving, financial decisions, home support and an advance care plan while the person can participate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for a sudden change in thinking, new weakness, severe headache, collapse, fever, a head injury or inability to stay awake. These may signal a problem other than the underlying dementia. Arrange prompt review after a fall, repeated fainting, new swallowing difficulty, frightening hallucinations or rapidly worsening confusion. Do not change dementia or psychiatric medicines without medical advice.
Questions for your doctor
Which symptoms support Lewy body dementia and which need another explanation? Could any medicine be worsening alertness or movement? Would a Mental Health Assessment help? What support is available for falls, sleep or continence?
