What should you know about lots of lumps under skin?

Location, depth, tenderness, colour, firmness, mobility, and speed of change help a clinician assess a lump. Boils are often painful, inflamed collections related to an infected hair follicle. Other lumps may be soft, firm, cyst-like, or linked to irritation. A skin lump does not identify its cause from appearance alone. A lesion that bleeds, crusts, fails to heal, or changes deserves a professional examination, including consideration of basal cell carcinoma.

Do not squeeze, lance, repeatedly massage, or apply strong chemicals to an unknown lump. Keep the area clean and note when each lump appeared, whether new ones are forming, and any pain or drainage. Photographing the area in consistent light can help show change. For a tender boil, a clean warm compress may soothe discomfort, but avoid sharing towels and seek advice if it does not settle.

Arrange an assessment for persistent, enlarging, hard, fixed, bleeding, crusting, or repeatedly recurring lumps. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, severe pain, pus with fever, red streaks, or rapid swelling. A clinician may inspect the skin and decide whether observation, drainage, testing, or treatment such as an intralesional steroid injection is appropriate for a specific diagnosis.

Ask what features make the lumps benign or concerning, whether any need sampling, how to manage tenderness, and which changes should prompt an earlier review.
