Lotrimin for ringworm: what should you know?

Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. It can produce an expanding, itchy or scaly patch with a more active edge, although appearances vary. Skin Rash and Scaly Skin can have many other causes, so a circular patch does not prove ringworm. Lotrimin is a brand name used for topical antifungal products; the active ingredient and directions can differ between products. Infection may spread through close contact, shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, or pets.

Read the package directions and use the product on clean, dry skin, including the surrounding area specified on the label. Continue for the directed course even if itching eases early. Keep the area dry, wash hands after application, launder towels and clothing, and avoid sharing personal items. Do not put it in the eyes, mouth, or on damaged skin unless a clinician tells you to. Arrange medical advice if the rash involves the scalp, beard, nails, face, or genitals, or if it is extensive, painful, draining, or rapidly spreading.
