Lotions for Sunburn

How the structures involved in Sunburn differ from normal

Short answer

For mild sunburn, a bland fragrance-free moisturising lotion can soothe dryness after cooling the skin, but severe or blistering burns need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How lotion helps

Sunburn is an ultraviolet injury that can leave skin hot, red, tender, and dry. A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser or emollient helps reduce water loss and rubbing while the skin barrier recovers. It does not reverse the injury or replace shade and sun protection. Avoid products that sting, contain strong fragrance, or are applied to open skin. Redness may be followed by Peeling Skin, and more intense burns may form Skin Blisters. Repeated ultraviolet injury contributes to Sun-Damaged Skin over time.

How to care for it

Move out of the sun, take a cool shower or use a cool damp cloth, then pat dry and apply a thin layer of bland lotion while the skin is still slightly damp. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing, and avoid further ultraviolet exposure until the skin settles. Do not pop blisters or pull peeling skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether Emollient Therapy is suitable; do not apply Topical Corticosteroids to a sunburn unless specifically advised for your situation.

When to seek medical care

Seek prompt care for extensive blistering, severe swelling, intense pain, fever, chills, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or signs of dehydration. Medical advice is also appropriate for burns involving the eyes, face, hands, genital area, or a large portion of the body, and for an infant or young child. Get help if blisters become increasingly red, warm, swollen, or filled with pus. These features may indicate a deeper burn, heat illness, or infection rather than simple skin redness.

Questions for your doctor

Is this burn mild enough for home care? Which lotion ingredients should I avoid? How should I protect blistered skin? What signs would suggest infection or heat illness?

Questions people ask

Can I use any scented body lotion on sunburn?

Scented products may sting irritated skin, so choose a bland fragrance-free moisturiser instead.

Should I put lotion on a blister?

Do not pop the blister; ask a clinician or pharmacist how to protect it, especially if the area is extensive.
