Loss of taste on the tip of the tongue

The front of the tongue contains taste buds and can be irritated by a burn, sharp food, dental appliances, tobacco, vaping, or mouth products. Dry mouth reduces the saliva that carries flavour molecules to taste receptors. A coating, oral thrush, gum inflammation, or a healing injury may make one area feel different. Taste changes can also seem local even when the cause affects the whole sensory system. Nasal illness such as a Common Cold can alter flavour through smell pathways. COVID-19 and Long COVID are additional possibilities, but the location alone cannot determine a cause.

Rinse gently with water, avoid very hot or strongly acidic foods, and pause any new mouthwash or product that stings. Keep brushing and flossing carefully without scraping the area. Drink regularly and check whether a sharp tooth, retainer, or denture rubs the tongue. Record pain, numbness, coating, sores, and whether the change spreads. Do not apply household chemicals or unprescribed creams to the tongue. A dentist can assess local injury, teeth, and oral tissues; a clinician can review medicines and wider symptoms.

Seek urgent care for tongue swelling with breathing difficulty, sudden facial weakness, new speech trouble, or rapidly spreading infection. Arrange prompt dental or medical assessment for a sore, lump, ulcer, bleeding area, numbness, or patch that persists. Also book a review when taste does not return, the problem keeps recurring, or eating and drinking become difficult.
