Loss of taste after drinking alcohol is often temporary, but persistent or severe change needs medical assessment. Alcohol may dry the mouth, irritate the throat, or worsen nasal blockage, while dehydration and a hangover can make flavours seem muted. Smell contributes strongly to flavour, so a blocked nose can make food taste different even when the tongue is working normally.

A brief alteration can settle as you drink water, eat normally, and recover. Mouth ulcers, reflux, smoking, medicines, or an infection can also affect taste around the same time, so alcohol may be a trigger rather than the only cause. A new loss of taste with fever, cough, sore throat, or exposure to infection warrants consideration of conditions such as COVID-19. Changes lasting beyond recovery should be discussed with a clinician.

Pause alcohol until your taste and hydration have returned. Sip water, choose gentle foods, brush your teeth and tongue carefully, and avoid smoking or strongly flavoured mouth products. Check whether nasal congestion, dry mouth, or a newly started medicine is present. Do not taste spoiled food to test your sense; use dates and another person’s help when judging freshness.

Arrange medical advice if the change does not improve, keeps returning after alcohol, or comes with mouth sores, facial weakness, severe headache, or trouble swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, or sudden neurological symptoms. A clinician may examine your mouth and nose, review medicines, and decide whether testing is needed.

Tell the clinician when the change began, what you drank, how long it lasted, and whether smell was affected. Ask whether nasal symptoms, reflux, oral irritation, medicines, or infection could explain it, and which warning signs should prompt faster review.
