What should you know about loperamide travellers diarrhoea?

Loperamide slows movement through the bowel, giving the body more time to absorb fluid and making stools less frequent. It can ease symptoms but does not remove the underlying cause. Travellers’ diarrhoea may follow contaminated food or water, and symptoms can also arise from Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, or another condition. Persistent or recurring diarrhoea may need a different assessment.

Follow the product instructions or a pharmacist’s advice, and use the lowest effective amount for the shortest suitable time. Replace fluids and salts with frequent drinks or an oral rehydration solution. Wash hands and choose safe food and water. Do not give it to a young child unless a clinician advises it. Avoid combining products without checking their ingredients.

Do not rely on loperamide when stool contains blood or mucus, when fever or severe abdominal pain is present, or when the abdomen becomes swollen. Seek urgent help for faintness, confusion, very little urine, repeated vomiting, or marked weakness. Arrange medical review if symptoms do not settle, return after travel, or begin after recent antibiotics.
