What should you know about long term effects of hepatitis b?

Some people clear hepatitis B, while others have a persistent infection. In ongoing infection, immune activity can inflame liver cells over time. Healing and repeated inflammation may produce fibrosis, which can progress to cirrhosis and reduce the liver's ability to work.

Liver damage may be silent for a long time. Fatigue, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal swelling or easy bruising can occur, but symptoms alone cannot show how active the infection is.

Arrange follow-up with a clinician experienced in hepatitis B. Monitoring may include liver function tests, viral measurements and imaging when appropriate. Treatment is considered according to infection activity, liver health and other clinical factors.

Avoid alcohol, check medicines and supplements before taking them, and do not share razors, toothbrushes or needles. Household and sexual contacts should ask about testing and hepatitis B vaccination. Keep appointments even when you feel well.

Seek urgent medical help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe confusion, marked sleepiness, rapidly increasing abdominal swelling or yellowing with severe illness.

Contact your clinician promptly for new dark urine, worsening fatigue, yellow eyes, persistent nausea or right-sided upper abdominal discomfort. These symptoms need assessment and do not by themselves establish the cause.

Ask whether the infection is active, how often your liver should be checked, whether treatment is indicated, which medicines to avoid, and whether relatives or partners need testing or vaccination.
