What should you know about long lasting hiccups?

Short answer
Long lasting hiccups may result from irritation, reflux, medicines, or another health problem, so persistent or disruptive hiccups deserve a medical assessment.

Why hiccups may continue
A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the breathing muscle followed by brief closure of the voice box. Eating quickly, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, or emotional stress can trigger short episodes. Ongoing hiccups may reflect irritation of the nerves involved in this reflex, including irritation linked with Acid Reflux or Gastritis.
Persistent hiccups can interfere with sleep, eating, drinking, speaking, and wound recovery. Tell a clinician when they began, whether they stop during sleep, and whether heartburn, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or breathlessness occurs with them.
What you can try
Take small sips of water, eat slowly, and avoid large meals, fizzy drinks, and alcohol while symptoms continue. Sit upright after eating if reflux seems connected. Do not frighten yourself, choke on food, or use forceful breath-holding methods. Review your medicines with a clinician rather than stopping a prescribed treatment independently.
If reflux is suspected, ask whether Acid Reflux Medication is appropriate and how it should be used. Note triggers and the effect on sleep and nutrition so your GP can choose the next step.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice when hiccups persist, repeatedly return, or make eating, drinking, breathing, or sleeping difficult. Seek urgent help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, new confusion, weakness, fainting, or inability to swallow fluids. Vomiting with signs of dehydration also needs prompt attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether reflux, stomach irritation, or a medicine could be contributing, whether you need an examination, and which treatment is suitable for your health history. Ask what warning signs should prompt urgent help.
