What Is a Locking Plate and Screw?

The plate is shaped to fit the bone and acts as an internal support. The threaded heads of compatible screws lock into holes in the plate, creating a stable frame across the treated area. This can be useful when bone quality, fracture shape, or the position of a joint makes conventional fixation less suitable. The implant does not make the bone heal by itself; healing still depends on the injury, blood supply, alignment, general health, and the loads placed on the limb.

Follow the surgeon’s instructions about weight-bearing, splint or brace use, wound care, and exercises. Keep follow-up appointments so healing and alignment can be checked. Physiotherapy commonly progresses from safe movement to strength, balance, and functional loading. Do not add impact, lifting, or driving based only on reduced pain, because the bone may still be healing beneath a comfortable incision.

Contact the team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening swelling, new numbness, a cold or pale limb, or pain that is suddenly much stronger. Urgent care is appropriate for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, or a limb that becomes severely deformed or loses normal circulation. A new clicking sensation, hardware prominence, or inability to follow the prescribed movement plan should also be discussed.

Ask why locking fixation suits your bone and whether the plan involves fracture fixation, an osteotomy, a joint fusion, or another procedure. Clarify expected restrictions, signs of infection or circulation problems, follow-up imaging, and whether hardware is intended to remain in place.
