Can Locked Knees Make You Pass Out?

A true locked knee cannot fully straighten or bend, sometimes because tissue such as a torn meniscus interferes with joint movement. A painful catch, swelling, or a feeling that the knee gives way is related but may not be a fixed lock. Plica syndrome and other knee problems can also produce catching or pain. Fainting can follow intense pain or fear, but it may also reflect a separate medical issue, so the event should not be explained by the knee alone.

Sit or lie down if you feel faint, avoid standing suddenly, and do not force the knee through a blocked movement. If you lost consciousness, have someone stay with you and arrange medical assessment. Note what happened before the episode, how long recovery took, whether the knee was swollen, and whether there was chest discomfort, palpitations, injury, or seizure-like movement.

Seek emergency care after fainting with chest pain, breathing difficulty, a racing or irregular heartbeat, severe headache, confusion, persistent weakness, significant injury, or slow recovery. Get prompt knee assessment if the joint remains locked, becomes very swollen, looks deformed, or cannot bear weight. Repeated fainting or a first unexplained blackout also warrants medical review even if the knee later moves normally.

Ask whether the knee is mechanically locked or simply painful and guarded, whether imaging is needed, and what may have caused the blackout. Discuss medicines, hydration, heart symptoms, previous fainting, and safe movement until both concerns have been assessed.
