Liver disease and skin rash

Liver disease may cause yellowing rather than a typical inflamed rash, and itching can lead to scratch marks. Redness, scaling, rings, blisters, raised welts, or rash in skin folds often point clinicians toward other explanations. The appearance, timing, body sites, symptoms, and medicine history matter more than the phrase liver rash.

Photograph a changing rash in good light and record when it started, whether it spreads, and every new medicine, supplement, cosmetic, detergent, or food exposure. Arrange review if it persists, recurs, or comes with itching, fever, fatigue, yellowing, or dark urine. Until assessed, avoid fragranced products and scratching, cleanse gently, moisturise, and do not apply steroid or antifungal creams to an uncertain rash unless advised. A clinician may inspect the skin and order tests when liver symptoms are present.

Seek emergency help for a rash with facial or tongue swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, painful mouth or eye sores, or rapidly spreading purple spots. Get prompt medical advice for fever with a new rash, yellow eyes, severe abdominal pain, confusion, or a rash that begins soon after a new medicine.
