Liver problems in pregnancy and itching

Pregnancy can make skin dry, sensitive, or more prone to eczema and irritation. A liver-related pregnancy condition may cause strong itching without a primary rash, often involving the palms and soles and becoming more noticeable at night. It can also be felt elsewhere. A clinician will distinguish this from [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), contact irritation, hives, or scabies by asking about timing, distribution, skin changes, medicines, and other symptoms.

Contact your midwife, obstetrician, or maternity assessment service promptly if the itch is new, intense, widespread, or disturbing sleep. They may arrange blood tests for liver function and bile-related markers, then repeat monitoring if symptoms continue. Note when the itching began, where it occurs, whether a rash is present, and any urine or stool changes. Use fragrance-free moisturiser, lukewarm water, loose clothing, and a cool compress. Do not take an over-the-counter medicine, herbal product, or prescription treatment without checking its pregnancy suitability.

Seek urgent maternity advice if itching comes with yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, right-sided abdominal pain, or vomiting. Contact the maternity team immediately for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, fluid loss, contractions, or any concern about your baby. Severe headache, visual changes, or sudden swelling also need urgent pregnancy assessment.
