Liver disease and itchy skin at night

Liver-related itching may occur without a visible rash and can affect the palms, soles, arms, legs, or much of the body. Changes in bile flow can leave itch-producing substances in the bloodstream. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, nausea, tiredness, or discomfort under the right ribs make liver assessment more relevant. Arrange a medical review if the itch is persistent, widespread, or unexplained. A clinician may ask about medicines, alcohol, previous liver problems, bowel and urine changes, and inspect the skin; blood tests can check liver function and related causes. Keep showers lukewarm, use a fragrance-free moisturiser after washing, wear loose cotton clothing, and keep nails short. Avoid starting supplements or stopping prescribed medicine without advice. A cool room and a cold compress may reduce the urge to scratch at bedtime.

Seek prompt care for new yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, bleeding, or rapidly worsening itch. During pregnancy, new intense itching—especially on the palms or soles—needs prompt contact with the maternity team because liver-related pregnancy conditions require monitoring.
