The liver and menopause: what to know

The liver processes many medicines and hormones. If it is inflamed or not working normally, medicines may remain in the body longer or need a different approach. This does not mean every person with liver concerns must avoid menopause treatment. The choice depends on the liver condition, symptoms, medical history, and test results.

Menopause may bring hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, vaginal dryness, lower sex drive, and periods stopping. These symptoms can also have other causes, so assessment should consider the full picture.

Tell your clinician about liver disease, jaundice, previous abnormal liver tests, alcohol use, and every medicine or supplement you take. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Ask whether liver tests are needed before or during symptom treatment, and whether non-hormonal options or local treatments may suit you.

Arrange prompt medical review for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, unusually pale stools, persistent vomiting, severe right-upper-abdominal pain, confusion, or sudden marked swelling. Seek help for troublesome menopause symptoms too, especially bleeding after periods have stopped, because that needs assessment rather than being assumed to be menopause.
