What should you know about live attenuated measles vaccine?

The weakened virus stimulates immune memory. Measles vaccination is commonly provided as part of MMR, which also covers mumps and rubella. It is a preventive vaccine, not a treatment for an existing measles infection.

Pregnancy, immune suppression, serious allergy history and recent blood products can affect timing or suitability. A fever or swollen glands after vaccination may be a short-lived immune response, but these symptoms can also have other causes and do not by themselves establish measles.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy plans, immune conditions, allergies, regular medicines, previous vaccine doses and recent illness. Keep your vaccination record so the team can check whether MMR or another plan is appropriate.

After vaccination, expect practical aftercare advice from the clinic. Mild fever, tiredness, a sore injection site or swollen glands may occur. If fever develops, drink fluids and ask a pharmacist or clinician which medicine is suitable for you.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse, confusion or a seizure after vaccination. Contact a clinician promptly for high or persistent fever, a spreading rash, severe illness or breathing problems; call ahead if measles is possible so others are protected from exposure.
