What should you know about live attenuated influenza vaccine LAIV?

LAIV uses weakened influenza viruses rather than an injected preparation. The spray reaches the lining of the nose and prompts immune recognition. It is intended for people who meet the eligibility rules; a live vaccine is not automatically appropriate simply because it is needle-free.

A clinician checks factors such as pregnancy, immune suppression, serious allergy history, respiratory health, recent illness and medicines. These details can affect whether LAIV is offered or whether an inactivated vaccine is preferred.
